Lady Dedlock's Trap

And I've been caught. I am very intrigued by Lady Dedlock and she continues to haunt Bleak House. As for this fabulous production, I can't commend it enough. Suffice it to say, I think I've endured enough sores and pins and needles while attempting to sit still and watch a series that has more than six hours of viewing time.

Interesting recommendation! I've read similar ones over the years. Do you think you have to be keen on Dickens to like it? I'm not too fond of Dickens, you see.

Hi Cristina,
Do see it! You'd really like it, I am sure. I was not fond of Dickens myself, but after seeing this, I am more interested in his works.

This version of Bleak House is very well done, with excellent actors. It's probably one of the best BBC productions ever! It's got a bit of everything: humor, romance, tragedy, secrets, you name it! :)

So tempting :D I'll see what I can do.

Btw, I don't know how much or how little fond of Jane Austen your are, but I'm curious as to whether you have seen any of the latest ITV adaptations. I've only watched Persuasion so far, but will be watching the other two in the coming weeks.

Hi Cristina,
I watched Persuasion and Northanger Abbey and might watch Mansfield Park sometime soon. I enjoyed the version with Frances O'Connor that came out a few years ago.

But as for the ITV ones, I enjoyed Persuasion more than Northanger Abbey (I think Abbey is my least favorite Austen work). I liked the actress who played Anne and I think she was well-chosen. However, I thought it was a very maudlin take in the story.

What did you think?

I haven't watched the previous versions of Mansfield Park - the one that was so controversial - or Northanger Abbey. I did watch the 1990s version of Persuasion and I didn't like it. It was dubbed in Spanish and very badly too, so it might have been partly because of that.

The ITV Persuasion I didn't find all that great either. Entertaining, not bad... but not good or brilliant either. The cast wasn't bad. As you say, the actress playing Anne Elliot was really good. But the camera was awful and dizzying. And I didn't like the ending. The hesitant kiss and the dance on the drive. Ugh.

I've read Persuasion is supposed to be the best out of all the three recent adaptations. I'm quite curious about NA. I enjoyed the book.

Will you be seeing Becoming Jane? I recently found out that it doesn't open here until October! I'm curious to see what all the fuss is about actually.

Yes, the ending was very contrived, and for no apparent reason. They should have worked on the kiss too.

As for Becoming Jane, I might see it, like you, just to see what the fuss is about. It seems to diverge from what a biopic usually is. Perhaps I should brush up on Austen's life before I see it. But then again, I might find more to criticize :P

Miss Potter didn't live up to my expectations, and I fear it may not be different with Becoming Jane.

I loved this BBC version of Bleak House. The performances are so good from a great cast especially Anna Maxwell Martin as Miss Summerson. Some people were truned off by some of the non-traditional directing especially the sounds it uses to go from one scene to another although for me it did fit right in because the center of the story is a mystery. (If you are from the States it reminds one of notes used in the Law & Order series.) Also, I loved how each episode left one hanging which is actually in the spirit of how the original work was published because Dickens wrote it as a series. I was inspired to read the book. I am about 80% through it although sometimes I get lost trying to keep track of all the characters and how they are interelated. The mini-series and novel present such an interesting cross-section of Victorian society.

Hi there,
I simply love this version! It is so well done in every respect. And its non-traditional method of production was what I found most appealing about it: the direction, the scene structure, the music, and everthing in between.

I too was inspired to read the book and I am about 30% through it. I has been a nice ride so far and I already don't want it to end...
