Question: How in the world could Mr. Rochester still have been sleeping when there was a FIRE in his room?????? It baffles me!!! Is this even plausible???
oh yes! That's a good point Frankengirl. I believe they were trying to address the question I posed as well.. I know what you mean..I am not too fond of that idea either tho..
Gosh..I'd have thought Bronte would have had a good reason for including such a confusing scene..hmm :-/
haha!!! yeah..he could as well have been lost in a nightmare. And you know..Bronte could well have had in mind that he was probably dreaming of burning in Hell, like you said...
hmm..still..it seems unlike her to put a scene without a good enough reason (perhaps she did intend that he was drunk after all..who knows?)
Actually, if you recall Jane says the smoke had stupified him. I always thought it made that scene more terrifying. He never sees the fire, but sees the damage to the bed he was in by candle light- very creepy!
